A 14-year-old youth was discovered deceased only a few days after being wrongly blamed of stealing the cremated remains of a dead baby during a break-in, a coroner's inquiry has learned.

Heartbreaking Finding

Kai Lloyd's mother and father found his remains in his bedroom at his Flintshire home on November 19th, 2021.

Untrue Accusations Start

The investigation heard how his mother got a message on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a individual asking if Kai was her child. The communication stated: "Tell him appreciation for breaking into my apartment."

In a testimony read to the court, the mother said the woman had been in the media, claiming her baby's remains had been stolen in a break-in - a allegation which was untrue.

Law Enforcement Investigation

An investigation report from police later concluded the alleged break-in victim had "lied to police" and "it now appears that the items was not taken in the first place".

News coverage about the alleged stolen remains generated social media responses, and although Kai was not named in the posts, his parent said individuals "knew it was him".

The "social media content were really upsetting", she said.

Emotional Wellbeing Impact

She explained that her son had been identified with moderate ADHD, and as part of that condition, other individuals' opinions really mattered to him.

"This must have hurt him deeply," she commented, "especially when this was untrue".

The teenager was detained at home, but no evidence was discovered. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later freed pending further inquiry.

Police said they would be in contact, the hearing heard, but had failed to reached out to the relatives by the moment of his passing.

Withdrawal and Anxiety

His mother said Kai "withdrew into himself" after the detention and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had received anything from the police", because his ADHD meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like much longer".

When she spoke to him about the supposed burglary, she said her child informed her he had entered the residence because the woman who lived there had said he could use the toilet anytime he wanted, but denied taking anything.

Digital Harassment

In a combined testimony between her and her spouse, the mother said her child was being bullied digitally after the allegations.

The inquest learned that a young adult encouraged Kai to end his life.

She had no concerns on the night before he died, explaining how she had listened to him "laughing and teasing".

She described him as a "compassionate, affectionate" boy, and said her "family is completely devastated".

He had been "obviously concealing his concerns", she stated, noting that he could not stand to have anybody "think bad of him".

School Response

The inquest heard from educational personnel at the local secondary school.

On 8 November, she "overheard some students discussing that the student had been arrested and that was the first I heard".

"He told me... he'd was innocent," she added.

After the conversation, the educator said she called the family's family telephone and provided a voicemail saying she had spoken to the student about the accusations.

The court heard his family said they never got that communication.

Official Finding

Lead investigator informed the inquest he would wait for reports regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with suspects with ADHD, before deciding whether he should make a avoidance of future fatalities report.

Delivering a descriptive finding, he stated: "Approximately 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a young individual.

"Likely untruths were subsequently exaggerated and amplified through the platform of online networks.

"On November 11th, he was interviewed by the authorities and following his interview he was freed whilst investigations proceeded."

The coroner concluded: "Exists no evidence that the actions or omissions of any organization led to or added to his death and although it was the result of a personal action it is impossible to determine his purpose."
