Students Express Concerns That Artificial Intelligence Is Undermining Their Academic Skills, Research Shows

Based on new research, learners are expressing fears that employing AI is negatively impacting their capacity to study. Numerous report it renders schoolwork “effortless”, while others claim it hinders their original thinking and stops them from developing new skills.

Widespread Utilization of Artificial Intelligence Among Pupils

A study looking at the use of AI in British learning centers revealed that only 2% of learners aged 13 and 18 said they did not use artificial intelligence for their schoolwork, while four-fifths reported they regularly employed it.

Adverse Influence on Skills

In spite of AI’s popularity, 62% of the students reported it has had a unfavorable impact on their competencies and development at their educational institution. One in four of the respondents affirmed that artificial intelligence “makes it too easy for me to find the answers without doing the work myself”.

The findings correspond to scientific analyses on the use of AI in learning. A particular analysis evaluated brain electrical activity while written assignments among participants using large language models and found: “These findings provoke anxiety about the future scholastic effects of AI dependence and stress the importance of more extensive investigation into its learning functions.”

Roughly half of the numerous respondents questioned said they were anxious their peers were “covertly employing artificial intelligence” for schoolwork without their instructors being able to spot it.
