Spanish Authorities Detains 19 Suspects Accused of Brutality and Murder After 50 Passengers Vanish from Vessel
National authorities have arrested 19 individuals accused of murder and brutal abuse after over fifty migrants disappeared from a migrant boat sailing from West Africa to the Canary Islands.
Police believe some passengers were labeled of being "sorcerers" after several incidents throughout the journey, including mechanical issues, bad weather, and food shortages.
The wooden vessel was intercepted south of Gran Canaria on 24 August with 248 people aboard, according to law enforcement.
But, officials estimate that about 300 individuals were originally aboard, and that some were pushed into the sea.
Those rescued told police that a number of their fellow passengers began "attacking dozens of people, beating and abusing them in multiple forms," an official report indicated.
"On several occasions, they forced passengers into the sea alive and refused to rescue those who ended up in the water by accident."
Alleged killings were also documented "merely due to the fact that certain individuals protested or voiced their dissatisfaction with the situation of the voyage," authorities added.
A man died in hospital after being found seriously ill when the vessel was intercepted, as per reports.
Passengers included people from Senegalese, Guinean, Malian, Gambian, Sierra Leone, and Bissau-Guinean nationalities, local media reported.
All 19 suspects are in pretrial detention facing facilitating illegal migration, murder, physical violence, and severe abuse.
The country is among the frontline entry points for unauthorized entry into Europe, with the majority entering via the Atlantic islands.
Almost 47,000 migrants reached the islands in 2024, marking an all-time high for a second year, but numbers have been far lower in recent months, as indicated by government reports.
