Polish forces Scrambles Fighter Aircraft as Russia Targets Ukrainian regions near Poland
Russian forces pounded Ukraine with aerial assaults overnight on Saturday and into Sunday morning, concentrating on the key western urban center of Lviv.
Ukraine's neighbour Poland activated fighter jets to guarantee the safety of their national airspace, the national defense forces stated. Allied Nato aircraft were similarly activated.
Regional governor local authorities confirmed two people were killed in strikes in the area, and an additional two wounded.
In other developments, Russian forces again targeted energy infrastructure - and a facility was hit in an nocturnal assault on Zaporizhzhia region, where the city official said an individual lost their life and more than 73,000 people were without electricity.
Military Response
These attacks came shortly following a American representative indicated the United States would support Ukrainian forces conducting long-range attacks within Russia's borders.
"Our and partner nations' jets are active in Polish skies, while land-based anti-aircraft systems and radar reconnaissance systems have been brought to the highest state of readiness," military officials announced.
At 05:10, all of Ukraine was under air raid alerts following Ukrainian Air Force warnings of Russian missile and drone attacks.
Energy System Attacks
Russian military has escalated its attacks on the country's power grid.
The city's administration Andriy Sadovyi reported part of the city - 43 miles from the Polish frontier - had no power, adding that the local anti-aircraft units were engaged heavily in countering first a UAV and then a missile strike.
As of 07:30, multiple areas were left without power and public transport was yet to start running, with authorities stressing that it was "unsafe to venture outdoors".
In Zaporizhzhia, Russia's overnight attack left "over seventy-three thousand users... without electricity", according to regional officials.
One person was killed, and nine injured, Fedorov said.
A teenage female was among those requiring hospital treatment, he added, releasing images depicting a partly destroyed apartment building and a destroyed vehicle from the impact location.
Wider Consequences
Municipal transit in Ivano-Frankivsk, would "begin operations with delay" on Sunday, its mayor announced.
The series of attacks were part of Moscow's offensive against the whole of Ukraine overnight.
At around 06:00, Ukrainian defense officials said all of the country was under the threat of new missile strikes, following prolonged alert periods and warnings of aerial assaults.
Territorial Control
Moscow's troops have taken control of the majority of the Donbas area, including key eastern cities.
Russian authorities currently controls around a fifth of Ukrainian territory, including the Crimea region, which it seized in 2014.
International Context
In Russia, air defence units eliminated 32 Ukrainian drones during the night, news agencies reported on Sunday morning.
Last week, a American diplomat indicated that the US would support Ukrainian forces conducting long-range operations inside Russian territories.
Meanwhile, another Nato member - Lithuania - had to close its airspace temporarily after unidentified items were detected.
Lithuania suspended flights at its main international airport for several hours, before resuming operations at 04:50 on Sunday.
The aviation authorities stated the flight suspensions and diversions were "because of a possible series of aerial objects approaching Vilnius Airport".
