Live Match Coverage
21st Minute: Intense Action while Both Teams Compete
21 mins: The Broncos advance to the midfield and almost break through the defensive line via Walsh and Shibasaki on the left flank. Another excellent kick from Adam Reynolds on the last tackle maintains Brisbane's momentum. For three tackles they remain on the front foot, but a couple of offloads free the rapid Hughes, and when he's brought down on the defensive 40m line, a six-again is given for holding down. Melbourne are now in rhythm, and Warbrick slices through the line, followed by Xavier Coates making a dash – only for Walsh to catch him high with a shoulder charge! Could that be a yellow card? No, rules Atkins, because the winger was dropping low. Walsh is under review nonetheless, and Melbourne continue their onslaught.
19 mins: Munster Leads Storm Offense
19th minute: Munster is busy as the Storm charge at speed down to their attacking 30m line. On the right side, Hughes lofts a kick, Katoa rushes up, but in the aerial battle, the second-rower knocks on, and Brisbane finally get a respite.
18 mins: Storm Apply Force on Brisbane
18th minute: Melbourne execute a textbook set from the kickoff and apply significant pressure on Mariner with the final kick. Once more, the Broncos struggle to advance near halfway in reply, and Reynolds is forced to boot it deep to keep his team in touch.
17th Minute: Setback for Melbourne
17th minute: There's a setback for Melbourne. Howarth has been subbed out due to a groin issue. Wishart is entering in his position.
SUCCESSFUL TRY! Storm 12-6 Brisbane (Katoa, 15)
Spectacular, just brilliant. After consecutive set restarts, the Broncos are tiring. From tackle three close to the line on the left side, Melbourne move the ball inside for a couple of passes before Hughes kicks it off the ground and the onrushing Eliesa Katoa times his run to perfection to dive on the bobbling ball and rise to mark his team’s second try!
From just to the right of the uprights, Nick Meaney converts his second goal.
12 mins: Melbourne Show Thrilling Offense
12th minute: The Storm appear thrilling in attack. They have pace from the play-the-ball, power from the forwards, and sharp passing from the outside players. A dangerous attack concludes with a high kick to the left corner that is knocked on by Walsh and leads to a infringement to the Melbourne for an obstruction on Coates. The Storm reject the two points and set up under the posts. There’s a six again – and a further one – as Munster weaves left and right.
10th Minute: Back-and-Forth Action
10th minute: Stefano Utoikamanu has delivered as promised from the start and his carry from the kickoff allows Harry Grant, then Ryan Papenhuyzen, to dart from dummy-half. Hughes boots from 40 meters and Reece Walsh catches the high kick on his 10m line. Brisbane show reduced thrust this drive and get fortunate on the last when Hunt’s pass to Reynolds goes to ground. Not to worry, the veteran halfback kicks superbly to turn Coates around and makes the Melbourne wing to sprint from his try line. The Brisbane are overzealous with their pursuit, catching the winger with a high tackle, and Storm can kick for attacking field position.
SUCCESSFUL TRY! Melbourne 6-6 Broncos (Nick Meaney, 8)
After the scrum, Stefano Utoikamanu drives hard to the 20m line. Then, from fast play off the back, all of Melbourne’s big names get a touch as they catch and pass out to the right hand side until Meaney cuts inside, runs at an angle at high speed, and breaks through a weak tackle line to score for an instant reply!
The centre recovers to add the conversion. We have a shootout!
7th Minute: Both Sides Trade Sets
7 mins: The two teams trade cautious plays either side of halfway, but then the Broncos attempt to attack on their left side, only to fail to find Gehamat Shibasaki with the ball. William Warbrick rushes up and forces a knock on for his troubles.
5 mins: Ideal Opening for Broncos
5th minute: This marks the perfect beginning for the Broncos, scoring first before the Storm have even touched the ball, in an attack led by both Payne Haas and Walsh. The Storm might feel a little aggrieved at the referee awarding such an early penalty, but they were soundly opened by the blistering Brisbane offense.
CONVERTED TRY! Melbourne 0-6 Broncos (Mariner, 3)
After kicking downfield, the Broncos begin their attack. Storm concede a set restart for being offside, and quickly the ball is in the red zone. Where is Walsh? Waiting on the right side, drawing in Howarth, standing his ground, then someway passing to Mariner on his outside. The winger steps inside, crosses the try line, then just, only just stays in the playing area as he moves to score beneath the goalposts.
A review occurs before Reynolds dabs over the goal, but the video official confirms the referee's call. The venue is rocking to the sound of ecstatic fans.
2 mins: Early Penalty
2 mins: Corey Jensen, not Haas, takes the initial carry of the night and the Storm are quick to tackle… but just three tackles later the Storm give away the first penalty of the game for Grant impeding Payne Haas on the ground. Brisbane right away on the attack.
