Moscow's Drones and Missiles Bombard Western Lviv City in Prolonged Assault

Early on Sunday, the city of Lviv in western Ukraine, typically considered as one of the safest urban centers in the nation, experienced one of its most intense assaults following the outset of Vladimir Putin's comprehensive invasion.

For five hours, Moscow's Iranian-designed drones and rockets targeted the urban area, located around 70km from the border with Poland. Powerful blasts could be heard from the city center, a designated UNESCO heritage location.

Victims and Destruction Throughout Ukraine

Across the country, no fewer than five people were killed – four individuals in the Lviv region and another in the Zaporizhzhia city. Additionally, 14 people were injured. Among the victims was a teenage girl, who died along with three relatives when their residence was hit.

Sections of Lviv was left without electricity, as reported by the city leader. Major fires erupted in various areas, including a industrial zone in the southern part of the city.

As the acrid odor of smoke and fumes permeated the city, the regional governor urged inhabitants to close their windows and refrain from going outside or to utilize protective masks or breathing apparatus.

International Reactions and Defense Measures

Poland's air force stated it deployed fighter aircraft and took preventive action to protect its territorial skies after a recent violation by deceptive unmanned vehicles. Additionally, there were multiple unmanned aircraft observations in recent days in EU countries such as Denmark and Germany.

  • More than fifty rockets and approximately five hundred unmanned assault vehicles were utilized in the assault.
  • Weaponry comprised long-range guided missiles, Shahed-type drones and Kinzhal ballistic missiles.
  • Multiple areas were impacted, among them Ivano-Frankivsk, Zaporizhzhia oblast, Odessa, Kherson, Sumy, Kharkiv and Chernihiv territory.

Call for International Assistance

The nation's leader called on international partners to help boost air defense systems and to impose a restricted airspace – a step that to date been approached cautiously.

"A unilateral ceasefire in the air is possible – and it is precisely that which could pave the path to real diplomacy. America and Europe must act to make Putin cease," the statement emphasized.

In recent days, Russia has focused on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, leading to electricity outages in several regions, a tactic employed in the approach to winter for the past three years. At the same time, Ukraine continues to target fuel infrastructure deep inside Russian territory with its domestically developed long-range drones.

The city was underway of the yearly Lviv literary festival, with writers and audiences gathered in the city for one of the largest book festivals in the region.

By Sunday morning, debris was still falling on the streets of the city, as fatigued locals ventured out and attended church services. The twisted metal remains of a unmanned aircraft rested on a sidewalk near a block of flats, marked off with red tape.
