Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson disclosed he barely escaped a life-threatening accident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two safety personnel ran across the track directly in front of him

The dangerous situation happened on the third lap when safety workers were spotted on the racing surface as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to change his damaged front wing

Driver's Immediate Reaction

Moments later, the team's competitor Lawson radioed to his team engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you witness that? I nearly... ended their lives"

"I genuinely couldn't process what I was seeing"

"I rejoined with a brand new hard tyres, and then I arrived at Turn One and there were just two guys dashing across the track"

"I came close to striking one of them, honestly, it was so dangerous"

Track Safety Questioned

"Obviously there's been a failure in communication at some point but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"

"We fail to grasp how on a ongoing race track safety personnel can be permitted to just dash across the track in that manner. I have no idea why, I'm confident we'll get some form of reasoning, but it really can't happen again"

Governing Body Reviewing

Formula 1's governing body, the global motorsport federation, is actively examining the events

"Following a turn one incident, race control was notified that fragments were located on the track at the turning point of that curve" stated the regulatory authority

"During the third lap, safety personnel were informed and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and remove the wreckage once all cars had passed"

"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch marshals were withdrawn and a double yellow flag was displayed in that zone"

"We are still investigating what happened subsequent to that time"
